Growing Up in Indonesia

Growing Up in Indonesia

by : Arryo

Hola! After a long hiatus, finally I had time to update my blog with a new article. I was busy with stuff that came up lately. Fortunately, I could posted it here and the good news is that I finally got my bachelor degree in Mass Communication back in January 2018. Yeay! It was a great achievement and was so proud with it though after 4 years of ups and downs in the university.

Born, grew up and finished school in Indonesia, I’d like to mention about society system in Indonesia. Before that, here is a short description about Indonesia; a country situated between the Indian and Pacific oceans, it is the world’s largest island country, with more than seventeen thousand islands (In case you did not know about Indonesia) while Bali is the most popular island among others.

However, have you ever wonder how does it feel like growing up in Indonesian? Here are some facts as an Indonesian. In Indonesia, I see lots of differences from the way of living comparing to other countries especially the cultures, foods, etc. Here are some facts about Indonesian:

Wish for snow

Indonesia’s weather can be split into two seasons – summer and rainy throughout the year. Seriously it is not fun. The only way for Indonesians to experience the “real” snow is by travelling to other countries. That made us wishing for winter or snowfalls, sometimes, while knowing the fact that it is impossible. But personally, I wish I can feel the snow *one day*.

Bahasa Indonesia language

Obviously, we use Bahasa Indonesia language as our main language. Although, most of Indonesians have their own native languages based on where they came from. What about English? English language rarely got a place as a second language for Indonesian people. No wonder, some of Indonesians could not speak English very well nor understand it at all.

Respect someone’s older

Indonesians could not just call someone’s older by their names, even among friends. It is considered as impolite. Alternatively, there is an appropriate way addressing someone’s older. We add “Pak (Sir)”, “Bu (Mam)”, “Kak/Mas (Young adult male)”, or “Mbak (Young adult female)” then followed by their first name. It depends on their ages and genders. Often we feel uncomfortable / unmannered when addressing someone’s older by their name.

To Hot for a Walk

According to the researcher from USA revealed that Indonesia was the world’s laziest walkers and personally I did not deny it. Indonesian citizens prefer to drive their own vehicles than walking down the street while the sun burned their skin. No one can compromised the 12pm heat, unless you have no options but walk.

Rice, Rice and Rice

I heard some of them said that “A meal is not a meal without rice”. It shows that Indonesians really depend on rice for their meal and which is true. No matter what you have for your dinner, whether it was a steak, fast food or even instant noodles, they tend to add rice with it. Even for breakfast, Indonesians satisfy their growling stomach with high carbs (rice) rather than breads.

After knowing the habits of most Indonesians, can you point out any similarity or dissimilarity between your country and Indonesia?

Graduated at Twenty-Two

Graduated at Twenty-Two

by : Arryo

I believe everyone has their favourite month of the year, while mine is November. Luckily this November, I’m turning twenty two.  Generally, twenty-two is the phase where students graduated from college after four years of struggling for their bachelor degree. Of course, that made them happy and their parents proud of them. Aside from the good news, most of this fresh graduates will encounter the fear of what the future lies ahead, especially the overseas students.

No plans

The most common question that was asked to the fresh graduates is “What is your plan after you graduated?” or “What you wanna do after you graduated?”. And the simplest answer to that is “I don’t know.”. That’s the fact! But some of them will stick with the plan to find a nine-to-five job as soon as possible.

Being unemployed

Sent your employment letter to every single company everyday non-stop. Went into several job interviews and being rejected. At the end of the day, you are still unemployed and it makes you realized that finding a job is not as easy as what you have predicted. In the worst scenario, the trauma of being turned down will dent your confidence.

Money to survive

Whether you are overseas students or not, one thing for sure is that we all need money to live. This is the most difficult problem to deal with, especially for overseas students. They must learn how to spend their money wisely, from renting, foods, groceries and others. If you’re still unemployed, then how to survive with no income? Except from your parents.

Burden your parents

At this point, you will start feeling bad to keep asking your parents to support your needs.  Even though, they did not mind it at all. But, you couldn’t resist the feeling of how irresponsible you are.

Depression

Summing up the misfortunes that happened from being unemployed, no proper plans, financial problem, ages, can often be viewed as a sign of failure in society. I believe one of the biggest fear as a human is, the fact of being rejected / unaccepted in society as a failure and that could lead to depression.

If you happened to feel that way, then please take note about this.  A gentleman once told me about this “Do not mind of what other people think of you. They did not have the power to control over you. In the end, you are the one who is in charge of yourself.”

He added “You are not worthless for being unemployed. So, all you need to do is trying the best as you can and make your decision to keep going. Because, you are worth more than that.”

So, get back on your feet and deal with the pressure! It takes time, we just did not know when or how the life-changing moments came to us. Keep trying the best and remember to enjoy every moment that you have right now. Because, “you will figure it out.”

By any chance, if you were reading this post, I would like to thank you!

It's a Long Distance Relationship (LDR), not a written Fairy Tale Story

It's a Long Distance Relationship, not a written Fairy Tale Story

by : Arryo

Hola, readers! How was your Saturday night? Was it full of love in the air? Or perhaps waiting for a knight on a white horse to rescue you from the doomed castle? Hehe. Hoped it was not that bad. Starting from there, I got a new topic to write down again.

Before I start, do you believe that Long Distance Relationship (LDR) could end up with happy ending? I will leave the answer for you guys. I read like tons of LDR quotes before I started writing, and this quote got my attention, it said “People who say long distance relationships never work, clearly haven’t met us.” Pretty cool, isn’t it?

Basically, what I will spill out on here is about the things that you will encounter in LDR. Of course, it was based on writer’s experiences (Haha) sad. (I even wrote this on one lonely Saturday night). If you wanted to try LDR then you better read this first.

Non-stop “I miss you” syndrome is the best part

After the long hours of video call, it will not aid the “I miss you” feeling. Hehe. You will never get enough talking to your loved one. Then, you start texting again saying “I miss you so much and I love you.” Or probably make it a bit dramatic, who knows!?

But… those last precious 10 minutes as always

*Video Call* Your SO said “Alright baby, I’ll hang up now.” and you just like “But, babeb… Emmm.. Can I ask for your ten more minutes?” *Repeat*. That explained it all!

Those favourite secret midnight call

Love is all about sacrifice… sleeping time too! Cannot help, your body automatically wakes up at 3 AM or suddenly an enormous power runs through your body to keep you awake, just so you can talk to your SO (11 hour difference).

Desperately waiting for a reply

Believe me, it was super awful and it happened often! That unbearable anxious and sad feeling hit you, while your bae suddenly left with no reply for a day or probably three days for the worst part. In the end, you went upset and frustrated.

It is so UNFAIR!

Sometimes, you just have to accept the fact that you were in a LDR. In fact, seeing some hot couples walked down the street hand in hand really kill your Saturday’s mood. Next thing you probably will do is, lock yourself in the room and start blaming the unfairness situation.

Tears could be helpful too

I understand the unbearable mix up feeling going on there. All those ups and downs could leave you burst into tears, whether you like it or not. It is good though knowing that’s the reminder of how much you love your SO. You will feel at ease too after this. Just enjoy those tears that fell down.

Shout-out to all LDR-ers on earth! Have faith in your LDR, perhaps it would be a good ending for you. You know how precious your bae is and learn from all the ups and downs until the day where the plane ticket will be one way. Worth to experience it!

Insight of the favorite American Photographer

Insight of the favorite American Photographer

by : Arryo

Hola! One topic again for my affairs. It’s been three weeks. I started my internship required for graduating with my bachelors degree. I’m writing online content at a Jakarta entertainment magazine. The work is challenging churning out copy rapidly in English.  However, I can’t begin to put a value on how much I’m learning and developing skills which will undoubtedly aid me in the future.

Online magazine content is different than writing for a blog and my patience are tested as I struggle with writing completely in English. The higher stress is good and my English vocabulary is growing daily. I’m fortunate to have new friends to ease the stress.

Speaking of that, I’m proud of myself when I see the article published on the site, especially when the article required very little editing (haha..) Sounds simple, isn’t it? But, that’s the fact.

Apparently, I was asked to write an article last time, about Indonesian professional photographers. Then that topic came to me for my blog, since I have one favorite photographer too, whom is Uncle Paul Shefferly. He based in USA and has a Master of Fine Art. His photography and techniques are brilliant and innovative.

Although, I’m not a fan of arts, Uncle Paul’s artworks are exception. I’ve listed my personal favorites below.

Confluence
My favorite, this image effects me on so many different levels I can’t come up with just one word to describe how I feel when I look at it. which made this picture as my favorite of all. Like the name “confluence”, which merged the visual effects of black and white combined with a color negative. The Chicago skyline nestles into the Green River Canyon, Utah. Reminding me of a small village that surrounded by cliffs. It’s a brilliant piece.

Setting Moon, Rising Sun
Uncle Paul calls this a digital composite, it consist of three separate photographs layered in photoshop to create this stunning image of the Super Moon November 2016. The image initially made as a birthday card for his daughter is his representation of the days we complete adding one on to another as we achieve our goals in life.

Pink Roses
Playing with macro mode is one of this humble man’s speciality and it is one of the special present “birthday card” that I got on my 21st birthday. A tight focus on the flowers and one can almost smell the fragrance. Moreover, the entire flower collection will undoubtedly dazzle you.

Uncle Paul also has tons of amazing photograph that guaranteed, you couldn’t believe what you saw! In addition to his photography the multi-talented man also makes his own frames. Starting from wood frames to handmade clay frames with faux rock and metal finishes. Believe me, you will love all his artworks in an instant.

Do not worry, He put his artwork on market for every art lover to own! To purchase it, click here.

Next Holiday: Seychelles

by: Arryo

Holla~ It's been 6 months since last time I updated my blog ;') Let me tell you something, I went on a vacation with family in January 2017, it was fun, as I went back to hometown for 2 weeks and half (I guess). To do that, I ought to resign from the tour staff position. Sounds stupid? Actually, that was not the main reason of resign. It was because, I must worked as an itern to complete the Bachelor degree requirement. So, I took that chance for holiday. Thankfully, I found an internship position as an online writer at online media company. (need alot to learn)

Back to the topic! (I blabbered most part of my life already, haha) Okay, for this topic, it would be different with the previous posts. The fact is, mostly about my favorite Korean Actor Jeon No Min ssi though :D. This topic would be about the destination for your next holiday. Find it out below:

Seychelles's Map
A new destination for adventurous travelers is Seychelles, which is an archipelago of the 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, off East Africa. Favorite Pokemon

Favorite Pokémon
by: Arryo

Holla! I have a topic to start writing blog again, followed with some spare time while at the office and college still holiday. This time would be about Pokemon. Nowadays, Pokemon Go virus had been spreading all across the world, from children to adults also played it. Besides, my social media timeline was full of Pokemon Go issue.

Instead of the app, I prefer to discuss about the Pokemon. Before that, Here’s short description of Pokemon. The name Pokemon is the Romanized contraction of the Japanese brand Pocket Monsters. The franchise was created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1995, and is centered on fictional creatures called "Pokémon", which humans known as Pokémon Trainers catch and train to battle each other for sport. Consist of 6 generations (updated 2016), with different kind of monsters at each generation.

I bet you guys had played before or known what Pokemon was. Pokemon mascot goes to Pikachu, that  cute tiny yellow electric mouse with a red circles on its cheeks. However, Pikachu is not my favorite one, and here I listed down my top 3 favorite Pokemon:

1.  LAPRAS

Look at this cute sea creature with majority of blue color over its body. It has four flippers, and its front ones are notably larger than its hind flippers. It has long neck and large black eyes. Its most distinguishing feature is the gray shell on its back, which is largely dotted with blunt knobs.
Lapras also known as social Pokemon, and swim through the sea in large pods. Since Lapras is very docile and does not like to fight, so its fond of ferrying people on their backs. Lapras is Water / Ice type Pokemon.

2. MIGHTYENA

Fierce look

Like its name, Mightyena is based on a hyena. It lives in a pack in the wild. As a member of this pack follows the orders of its leader and chases down prey. It gives obvious signals when it is about to attack, as it starts to growl deeply and flattens its body. Mightyena defeats foes with perfectly coordinated teamwork. Mightyena is a Dark type Pokemon.

3. HYPNO

Cute Overload

Hypno is a human –like Pokemon with yellow skin. It has two triangular, ears on the top of its head and two sleepy looking eyes with a large nose underneath. Hypno also has arms and hands, which both have five digits. It is also always carrying a small pendulum, which it uses in most of its Psychic based attacks.
Fortunately, Hypno is Psychic  Pokemon, so it is able to put people to sleep. It can sense the dreams the victim is having, so it knows what kind of dream it would be eating. If anyone comes by, Hypno will hypnotize them and eat their dreams. While it awaits its prey, it polishes its pendulum. *Love the nose on that sleepy face while carrying a small pendulum, so cute!

I had listed down my top 3 favorite Pokemon. However, there were some Pokemon that got my attention though. But, not as my favorite. On the other hand, there were so many useless Pokemon that I dislike, which are Rattata, Zubat, Pidgey, and others random and weak Pokemon that love to show up everywhere in Pokemon World!

Despite that, I believe you all have your own favorite Pokemon that would be not the same with mine. If you are playing Pokemon to the next level (Pokemon Go), I wish you good luck, stay safe, and "Gotta Catch'em All".

Future, Expectation, Appearance and Reality

Future, Expectation, Appearance and Reality

by: Arryo

Holla! Back again this July 2016 with a new topic that was not related to Jeon No Min ssi profile. Took me a day to complete and write down this feature as I need to structure sentences properly. *Pardon My English*

It was my Uncle whom inspired me for this topic. Few days ago, when we chatted about things that we fear of (actually it was me that shared a thing that I fear of and I told him I was scared of problems that will come that I could not handle… Blah blah blah, HAHA). Then at some point he replied “I have a thing about fear. Future, Expectations, Appearance, Real”. It took me a moment to understand what was that mean.

Unfortunately, I could not completely understand what is that mean. However based in my opinion, we all have future of our own path as God has been set it up for anyone of us. Future is something that we have to face and we have to prepare it for a better one later. We didn’t know what the outcome would be, but at least we try to do the best for it. Then, we started to expect what is the good way for future.

Expectations. At this point, we started to expect. We put our goals so high hoping that we could accomplished it.

Before I wrote down my opinion for Appearance, I list down an example that I found on other website.

Appearance: The way that someone or something looks. Example as below,
Napoleon’s Leadership Appearance:
1. Napoleon’s leadership according to Squealer was that Napoleon was doing a better job than Mr. Jones.
2.  Squealer would compare being slave with Mr. Jones to being free with Napoleon.
3. The animals believed that Napoleon was a better leader because they didn’t want Jones back.

In this case, I describe “we” as judges of the plan that been made at expectations point before. From my point of view, we planned everything that we think was right due to accomplish our own goals.

Reality: The world or the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them. Example as below:
Napoleon’s Leadership Reality:
1. Napoleon was a dictator.
2. He killed animals if they disagreed with him.
3. He created a hierarchy of the animals.
4. He was unfair and didn’t tell the animals what was going on.
Thanks to: https://prezi.com/rykgdeikqtgr/appearance-vs-reality-animal-farm/

My conclusion from the example, reality contradictive with appearance. Reality provide the fact of Napoleon, as Appearance based on people opinions toward Napoleon. If I related to my case, the reality sometimes appeared to be something that’s not what we’re expecting and it brought us a big disappointment of what we believe in.

I repeat it one more time, most of it was my opinion. So if you found it wrong, any comments to me would be appreciated.

More importantly, I would like to say thank you to my Uncle, as he shared to me lots of useful information, including this one (Later, I will ask him for the explanation about those points). Anyway, I’m glad and happy to know the fact that he is a smart, caring, nice and kind person. I hope that he could be someone that I can depend on beside my parents and brothers. Thank you Uncle!
